Rubber Mount Ultimate Guide

Rubber mount is made of shock-absorbing material and metal mounting parts. It is usually a rubber cylinder with metal studs or threaded holes glued on both ends.

Which Materials Absorb Vibration?

There are many types of shock-absorbing materials, including rubber, EVA, ACF, D3O and PU, metal springs, sponges, etc. For industrial applications such as automobiles and machinery, the material selection of shock absorbers must consider factors such as shock absorption performance, impact resistance, durability, scope of application, and cost-effectiveness. Rubber is often the preferred choice.

Rubber has high elasticity and viscoelasticity, that is, the elastic deformation of rubber is large and the elastic modulus is small, which means that it can effectively cope with various dynamic loads without excessive deformation. In addition, the impact stiffness of rubber is greater than the dynamic stiffness, and the dynamic stiffness is greater than the static stiffness. This characteristic is conducive to reducing impact deformation and dynamic deformation.

Rubber mounts also have good damping performance, which can convert vibration energy into heat through the elliptical hysteresis line of the stress-strain curve, thereby reducing the vibration amplitude. This damping characteristic not only improves the shock absorption effect, but also extends the service life of the equipment and reduces maintenance costs.

In addition, the shape of the rubber mount can be freely selected, and the hardness can be adjusted through the formula design to meet the stiffness and strength requirements in different directions. This flexibility enables rubber mounts to be widely used in various types of machinery, automobiles, railway locomotives, water transport vehicles, aircraft and other aircraft.

Lingou provides standard rubber mounts made of natural rubber, with an outer diameter of 8-150MM to meet the optional installation of various equipment. Of course, we can also provide other rubber materials according to your requirements. Certainly, we can also provide other rubber materials according to your requirements. If you need customized dimensions, load-bearing capacities, or other functional specifications, we can definitely offer customization services for you.

The shock-absorbing materials we can provide for rubber mount include but are not limited to the following:

  • Natural rubber (NR): has good elasticity and wear resistance, high elasticity and oil resistance. Widely used, commonly used in automotive shock absorption systems and various shock absorption components.
  • Nitrile rubber: has excellent oil resistance and chemical corrosion resistance, suitable for shock absorbers that need to resist harsh environments.
  • Chloroprene rubber (CR): has good weather resistance and anti-aging properties, suitable for use in various climatic conditions. For example, it is suitable for some low-frequency mounting parts and can work in the temperature range of -30℃ to +100℃.
  • Silicone rubber: has excellent high and low temperature resistance, suitable for shock absorption applications under extreme temperature conditions.
  • Styrene-butadiene rubber: It combines the advantages of natural rubber and synthetic rubber, has good comprehensive performance, and is widely used in shock-absorbing devices in the fields of construction, bridges, etc.
  • Butadiene rubber: It has high viscoelastic properties, and its cold resistance, wear resistance and elasticity are particularly excellent after vulcanization.
  • EPDM rubber: It has excellent oxidation resistance, ozone resistance and erosion resistance. It is widely used in shock-absorbing products under various harsh climatic conditions.

Why Is Rubber Mount So Important?

Vibration Isolation and Shock Absorption

Rubber mounts can cushion shocks and impacts, absorb and attenuate vibrations from machinery or engines. This minimizes the transmission of vibrations to surrounding structures and protects sensitive equipment, ensuring stable and normal operation. This also helps reduce maintenance costs and downtime associated with vibration-related damage.

Due to vibration, the structure and components of the machine will be subjected to repeated alternating loads, resulting in fatigue damage and accumulation, which will eventually lead to damage to the machine and shorten its lifespan. Rubber mounts can help mitigate the harm caused by such vibrations.

In vehicles and other machinery, the vibration damping and noise reduction capabilities provided by rubber mounts enable smoother and quieter operation, enhancing the comfort of passengers or operators.

Noise Reduction

By isolating and reducing vibrations, rubber mounts can significantly minimize noise levels.

Rubber mounts are cost-effective and easy to install, making them a practical choice for many applications. They provide a long-lasting solution.

Types of Rubber Mounts

Cylindrical Stud Mounts

The cylindrical stud mounts can evenly distribute loads and stresses, providing reliable performance both axially and radially. They are easy to install and replace, making them a versatile solution for reducing noise and vibration in various mechanical systems.

Conical Rubber Mount

The conical rubber mount tapers from a wide base to a narrow top, resembling a cone. This design offers excellent vibration isolation and shock absorption, capable of withstanding both vertical and lateral forces, making it particularly suitable for high-load applications. Conical rubber mounts are commonly used in automotive and heavy machinery environments, helping to minimize vibrations transmitted from the engine and other moving parts to the chassis or frame.

Conical Rubber Mount

Tapered Rubber Mounts

Tapered rubber mounts are designed with a gradually decreasing diameter, enhancing the mount’s ability to compress and absorb energy, providing an effective solution for applications requiring progressive load deflection and high vibration damping capabilities.

Tapered Rubber Mounts

Waisted Rubber Mount

The waisted rubber mount, also known as an hourglass rubber mount, features a unique shape with a narrower middle section compared to the ends, which enhances its flexibility against torsional forces. These components are designed to support static loads only in the vertical and compression directions. They are not suitable for operation under shear or tensile loads. This unique design improves flexibility making it an ideal choice for applications experiencing complex movements or directional forces.

How Do Anti-Vibration Mounts Work?

Rubber mounts are effective at shock absorption because rubber can deform and rebound, converting kinetic energy into heat, which reduces the energy transmitted to equipment. This ability helps rubber mounts absorb and counteract various forces, minimizing impacts and vibrations in machinery.

types of forces rubber mounts can resist

Rubber mounts primarily resist compressive and shear forces. When a vertical force is applied, it compresses the rubber mount, making it well-suited for applications with vertical loads. Shear forces, applied parallel to the mount’s surface, cause it to deform through sliding. The rubber’s elasticity allows it to handle these lateral movements effectively.

While rubber mounts mainly deal with compressive and shear forces, they can also resist tensile and torsional forces depending on their design and material. Tensile forces stretch the rubber, and torsional forces twist it.

The hardness of the rubber is key to its performance, determining how much weight or load the mount can support while maintaining durability. Hardness is measured on the Shore A scale, typically ranging from 40-90 for rubber mounts. Softer rubber (lower Shore A) offers better vibration isolation, ideal for sensitive electronics or lightweight machinery. Harder rubber (higher Shore A) provides greater load-bearing capacity but less vibration isolation.

Finally, the ability of a rubber mount to resist deformation and maintain performance after repeated use is crucial for assessing its quality.

FAQ

Q: How long does it typically take to get a quote?

A:If all of the information is provided up front, a quote can be generated in 24-48 hours. Parts bonded to steel quotes typically take longer.

Q:What’ s the standard lead time?

A:4-6weeks for tooling and samples; 3-4weeks for parts.

Q: Does LINGO require minimum order?

A:Yes. The MOQ varies based upon the mold, process and products. Therefore,  each item is reviewed individually.

Q:What material properties should I consider for my project?

A:Among the many physical  properties, you can consider:

  • Hardness (durometer)
    • Tensile strength
    • Tear resistance
    • Abrasion resistance
    • Protection from degradation caused by sunlight, oxygen and ozone (“rooftop” conditions)
    • Ability to retain properties while exposed to heat or cold
    • Resistance to compression set or tension  set
    • Resilience
Q: Is all work done at your facility?
